Fiancé Finale JustRead Takeover + Review Blitz

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for Fiancé Finale by Angela Ruth Strong hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

There's nothing quite like a story that starts with a turned down marriage proposal.

Charlie Newberg believes God told him to marry Nicole Lemaire, but she doesn't seem to agree. Their broken engagement five years ago has not helped the start of what he hopes will be something new. But Nicole's job in marketing just took a major hit, and now she's forced to rely on Charlie and his award-winning documentaries to get her professional career off the ground again.

This Love Off Script series has been so fun. It's romcom, but it has real depth to it. That said, I almost felt like Fiance Finale had too much depth. Charlie is passionate about real issues around the world, like illegal gold mining and the lack of prenatal care in some Asian countries. The world needs people who are passionate about these things, but his drive was so overpowering that it almost dragged this book down, the same as it threatened to drag down his relationship with Nicole. That said, I was really rooting for him to be able to succeed in these documentaries because they are important issues that need to be brought to light.

There is a good faith thread woven through the book, becoming especially strong at the end. Readers who loved the other books in this series will be happy to see plenty of their favorite characters. I laughed out loud and even cried while reading the story. I enjoyed seeing each of these characters learn and grow, fall and get back up.

If you're looking for a story that will make you laugh and make you think, be sure to check out Fiance Finale as well as the whole Love Off Script series.

I received my copy of the book from JustReads Publicity. All thoughts in this review are my own.

About the Book

Fiancé Finale

Title: Fiancé Finale
Series: Love Off Script #3
Author: Angela Ruth Strong
Publisher: Kregel Publications
Release Date: October 22, 2024
Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance

Charlie Newberg is sure about one thing: Nicole Lemaire is the woman God wants him to marry. There's a slight problem, though—he's already left her once. The day before their wedding. To make a documentary.

But he's got a plan. The marketing firm she works for is the ideal choice for promoting his new film. Collaborating will give him the perfect chance to propose again, so he conspires with her boss to make sure she runs the campaign for the same kind of documentary Charlie left her—basically at the altar—for.

Despite Nicole's resistance, the two work well together. But Charlie's going to need more than teamwork to convince the jilted bride to give him a second chance. In fact, he might need to fall in love in a way he's never really understood.

Where Trees Touch the Sky JustRead Takeover + Review Blitz

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for Where Trees Touch the Sky by Karen Barnett hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

This split-time novel brings the majestic redwood trees to life in a way that fully captured my imagination. I've never visited Redwood National Park, but I almost feel as if I have through the pages of this story.

In the 1920s, Marion Baker is a young organizer with the Save the Redwoods League. Her connection to the area and passion for preservation drive her to protect the forest from an encroaching timber baron. But when the timber baron's son steals her heart, she faces a choice about which love she must follow.

In the other half of the story, it's the 1970s and Marion's great-niece June Turner is ready to follow the family legacy and become a park ranger. A childhood bout with polio has limited her mobility, but June is determined to overcome any weakness and inspire a new generation to appreciate the giant redwoods.

I really enjoyed this novel. Both storylines were very well-written and engaging, and the pacing was perfect between the two. The story is very character-driven, which I loved, though there is some exciting action in the last quarter of the book as things come to their climax. The author does a great job weaving in faith, the challenges faced by the disabled, and other true-to-life historical tidbits that remain relevant today. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good split-time novel or who loves the national parks. Be warned: You'll want to plan a trip to California after reading this!

I received my copy of the book from JustRead Tours. All thoughts in this review are my own.

About the Book

Where Trees Touch the Sky

Title: Where Trees Touch the Sky
Series: National Parks
Author: Karen Barnett
Publisher: Kregel
Release Date: August 13, 2024
Genre: Christian Fiction, Dual Timeline

Some secrets have shadows as long as the redwoods are tall.

In the early 1920s, the accelerating destruction of the California redwoods is more than nature-loving Marion Baker can bear. Throwing herself headlong into the work of the Save the Redwoods League, she is shocked to learn that Frank Duncan, a man she's grown to love, is the son of one of the area's worst timber barons. Though devastated by the betrayal, she realizes this could also be an opportunity--if only she can convince him to help preserve her favorite grove from his father's greedy grasp. Is her love strong enough to persuade him to save these precious trees? Or will Marion choose to sacrifice her beliefs to keep Frank by her side?

Nearly fifty years later, in 1972, polio survivor June Turner is deeply proud of the legacy her great aunt Marion has left as a redwood warrior. And despite her disability, June is determined to prove herself capable as a ranger at the recently established Redwood National Park, even if it means taking to the trails with her crutch in hand. What better way to carry on the family tradition of preserving GodÂ’s magnificent creation?

When aspiring film student Adam Garner approaches June to help make a documentary about Marion's life, she swiftly grabs the opportunity to spread her aunt's worthy reputation. That is, until they unearth a secret that might shatter the family legacy. In the scramble for answers, June may lose not only her family pride but also her own dreams.

Karen Barnett's beautifully crafted split-time novel, set against the majestic backdrop of a beloved national park, immerses the reader in history that feels as fresh as if it happened yesterday.

Hero Debut JustRead Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for Hero Debut by Angela Ruth Strong, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

Gemma Bennet has her eyes on her hero. Police lieutenant Karson Zellner has captured her fancy since the moment he burst into her home under the mistaken impression that she was being held captive against her will. No, Gemma hadn't been kidnapped—she'd been doing research for a scene in the screenplay she was writing. Now she believes Karson is the perfect muse for her new police-centric romantic comedy.

When Gemma signs up for the Citizen's Safety Academy, which just so happens to be led by Lt. Karson Zellner, her own life turns into a comedy of errors. How many ways can she fall into trouble? And how can she help Karson fall in love—with her?

Karson knows a bad thing when he sees it, and Gemma Bennet is a very bad thing. At least for his bruised and well-protected heart. She's only interested in her image and in making the right impressions. But he can't help being attracted, and as they spend more time together he realizes he might be wrong about her. There might be much more to Gemma than the beauty that meets the eye.

This story made me laugh out loud and totally fall for Gemma and Karson. I love stories that are funny but also hold a rich depth, and Hero Debut definitely challenges the reader to look below the surface and examine their own lives for areas where they need healing and growth. I also truly enjoyed catching up with characters from Husband Auditions, and that helped their own story feel more complete.

If you enjoy romantic comedies with faith themes, Hero Debut is the book for you!

About the Book

Hero Debut

Title: Hero Debut

Series:
Love Off Script #2

Author:
Angela Ruth Strong

Publisher: Kregel

Release Date:
August 29, 2023

Genre:
Christian Contemporary Romance

"Another sparkling feel-good romance, brimming with perfect doses of heart and heat!"-- Bethany Turner, award-winning author of The Do-Over

Gemma Bennett is the leading lady of her own life, and her true love is writing screenplays. With her trusty pink notebook in hand, she signs up for the Citizen's Safety Academy to research her newest blockbuster hope, a rom-com with a police officer as the hero. And the fact that the handsome and heroic Lieutenant Karson Zellner is the one leading the training? Well, who can blame her for wanting to spend evenings with the man she swooned over months ago when he responded to a call at her apartment?

Karson already has his fair share of problems before Gemma shows up, and he's not exactly a fan of the ditzy blonde who can't seem to stay out of trouble. The last thing he needs is a damsel in distress to rescue; there are plenty of people in real need of his help. The fact that she seems to think his job makes him a superhero is just one more strike against her. This isn't a movie, and he feels like the furthest thing from a leading man.

Gemma can't seem to stop doing the worst, most embarrassing things at just the wrong time. And as time goes on, Gemma begins to realize that the scripts for a perfect screenplay and a real-life happily-ever-after are two very different things. Can she step out of her own way to find the hero her story needs?

Dedicated to the One I Love JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Dedicated to the One I Love by Beth K. Vogt, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

Kylie Franklin, writing as Veronica Hollins, can't finish the romance she was working on when her husband passed away three years ago. She keeps trying, but the happily ever after just won't come. However, a blossoming friendship with Joe Edwards is beginning to help her believe all hope is not lost in the personal romance department, even if she's never met Joe face to face—yet.

When Joe Edwards, writing as Tate Merrick, hears back from his editors that they want to add a romance thread to his latest military suspense novel, he is not happy about it. They think bringing in Veronica Hollins will bring Tate new readers and take his fiction to the next level. But that's not what Joe wants. He's never needed romance in his fiction before, and in real life it's never worked out well for him either.

Joe gets brave enough to invite Kylie to a holiday celebration, and their friendship immediately falls apart as they recognize each other as Tate and Veronica. Working together is NOT going to happen. Except their editors demand it. What can they do but try?

This book was pretty cute with lots of You've Got Mail undertones. Kylie and Joe both have memorable friends who help drive the story forward when these two stubborn main characters want to stay in the frenemy zone.

While I enjoyed the story, I thought Joe's voice and emotional journey was underdeveloped. I often didn't understand why he did the things he did, and I also didn't find him particularly likable. I found the writing aspect of the story wasn't very realistic, which is kind of odd for such a main part of the plot.

This book is more of a straight romance than a romcom, but it's still light and amusing. I appreciated that there was a bit of a faith arc. Anyone looking for fun summer reading would enjoy this, especially if they like the enemies to lovers trope.

I received my copy of the book from JustReads Publicity. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Contemporary Romance

She doesn’t believe in love anymore. He doesn’t either.

They’re perfect for each other.

Beloved romance novelist Kylie Franklin walked away from her pen-name career as bestselling and award-winning Veronica Hollins the day her husband died. Her loyal readers are eager for the final book in her sensational series. But Kylie’s given up on love, both fictional and in real life. Behind her back, Kylie’s agent contrives a way to get her writing again.

Joe Edwards has made a name for himself with his popular military suspense novels under the pen name Tate Merrick. Yet he can’t quite break onto the bestseller list. What his books need, his publisher suggests, is some romance. Joe flat refuses. However, his publisher is determined and hires Veronica Hollins to save the day—and his career.

Veronica and Tate quickly realize they’re Kylie and Joe, good friends who connected online via a popular word game and their mutual love of trivia. Surely they can wrangle their alter egos into this literary collaboration. But as the deadline looms, their differences threaten the romance developing off the page.

From a Christy Award-winning author comes this charming mash-up of hidden identities, literary tug of war, and falling in love when you least expect it.

Holding onto Hope JustRead Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for Holding on to Hope by Janet W. Ferguson, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

When wedding planner Hope Rodriguez's friend needs her to plan a last-minute destination wedding in Wyoming, she is eager to jump on a plane and head west. Her own love life has been going nowhere for years, and she just found out the guy she's dating now doesn't believe in marriage. At least she can help Andrew and Caroline have the big day they deserve.

Facing an uncertain future after some things he didn't see coming, Caleb Donnelly joins Hope in order to help in any way he can. He might not know much about weddings, but he knows he's been in love with Hope since he was a teenager. She's never looked his way and he would never do anything to risk the friendship they share.

But as one thing after another goes wrong, Hope and Caleb find themselves spending more and more time together, supporting one another and trying to make this wedding happen according to the bride's wishes. As Hope begins to see Caleb in a new light, will he be brave enough to hold on to her?

I always love how Janet W. Ferguson portrays characters with real, everyday faith. Caleb's relationship with God centers him, and Hope sees the kind of faith she wants when she looks at Caleb. There's an emphasis on relationships and marriages that honor God and are faithful to Him and each other.

Although there are a number of funny moments as things keep going wrong, I found my suspension of disbelief was stretched a bit about the comedy of errors and a few other things as well. Still, if you're looking for a light read that highlights a beautiful part of the country and also packs a serious wallop in the faith department, this book is one for you.

I received my copy of the book from JustReads Publicity. All thoughts in this review are my own.

If only she had her own special someone. Her only current prospect leaves her with more questions than answers about where she falls in his list of priorities. Yet, when a lifelong friend asks her to plan a destination wedding across the country in only two weeks, she’ll have to figure out how to pull off the impossible…alone.

After being burned as a child and deserted by his family, Caleb Donnelly has an intimate relationship with pain. America's Favorite Christmastown

Vlogger Alexis is returning to her hometown of Icicle Creek, WA, after a breakup with her boyfriend and video partner. She isn't sure what the future holds, but she needs time to get back on her feet. Her grandmother needs her, too. Oma has recently been contemplating purchasing and renovating a local camp, and Alexis is sure this is not a project Oma needs to be undertaking at her age.

Justin is tired of life in D.C. and has started a successful realtor practice back in Icicle Creek. He's got several big sales on the horizon, including the camp. But when his high school friend Alexis pushes back against her grandmother buying the property, will it throw things off course?

Meanwhile, Justin's love for Icicle Creek has prompted him to put the town into the running for America's Favorite Christmastown. Can he convince the residents to go along with the plan? How could they ever get the professional quality of video needed for the entry? Perhaps Alexis could help. And perhaps working together would give them the chance to get reacquainted on a personal level.

I thought this book had great potential to be charming and full of good conflict. It didn't quite deliver for me, as it took so long to set up the main premise of the story, and the narrative seemed to jump around a little too much. I was confused a few times about what was going on. I didn't develop a connection with either main character, and was disappointed the contest didn't feature more prominently in the storyline. However, the romance is sweet and clean, and everyone loves a good hometown narrative. I'd recommend this book for those wanting something light and uplifting this holiday season.

Make You Feel My Love JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Make You Feel My Love by Robin Lee Hatcher, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

Movie star Liam Chandler is still healing after the death of his brother. Retreating to Chickadee Creek, Idaho, which his ancestors help settle years ago, Liam embraces a quiet life where he can remain anonymous.

Chelsea Spencer is hiding from an abusive ex-boyfriend and helping her great-aunt Rosemary get back on her feet after surgery. As Chelsea helps organize Rosemary's antique store, she finds a priceless treasure that once belonged to one of Chickadee Creek's most prominent families.

In the historical half of the novel, Preston Chandler sets up his mining business while socialite-turned-schoolteacher Cora Anderson finds solace in the mountains after running from her past.

I've come to really enjoy Robin Lee Hatcher's split-time novels. Her characters are always interesting, and this time I especially related to Chelsea, who had a conservative upbringing not dissimilar to my own, though thankfully mine was not traumatic in the same way. I also appreciate how Robin uses short scenes to keep you turning pages. You want to find out what happens to the characters! The faith content is always solid as well. I'll be looking forward to her next release!

Keep reading for your chance to win this book in a giveaway.

Castle of Refuge

Audrey longs for a chance to make a shining difference in the world. Just when it appears that might be happening, her cruel sister causes an injury which disfigures Audrey and tears down her hopes and dreams for the future.

Edwin knows a thing or two about disfigurement. In Court of Swans, the first book in this series, he lost his arm trying to save himself and his brothers from execution after being falsely accused of murder. Adjusting to life with one arm, when before he had been an able-bodied knight, has proved a challenge.

When Audrey runs away from home to save herself from an unwanted marriage, she collapses, sick and weary, on Edwin's property. The two of them see a spark of familiar pain in the eyes of the other, and together seek to protect themselves and those they love from the machinations of Audrey's evil sister Maris.

I really enjoyed the first half this book. Audrey was a bright light, even with all that she'd gone through. I noted down a few quotes from the book, including this one from Chapter 8: "God must have a reason for allowing her scars." I think many of us, whether our scars are external or internal, can relate to wondering how God can choose to work through the pain we've gone through and the scars we've collected. In the second half of this book, the emotions got a little overwrought for my taste, with a lot of crying as dangerous events unfolded. Overall, I do think this is a valuable book for a young adult audience, as it teaches that our woundings and limitations do not define who we are, and that God still has a wonderful plan for our lives even when we might think we've lost our chance for it.

I received my copy of the book from JustReads Publicity. All thoughts in this review are my own.
Molly Banner

Molly will never tell a lie. As a compulsive truth-teller, working in a Montesorri pre-school, with their child-led learning philosophy, seems ideal. She also has a tender heart toward children. But when parents complain that she's been over-truthful about things like Santa Claus and reproduction, Molly is let go from her job.

If anything is worse than being fired, it's having your firing witnessed by a stranger. But that handsome stranger proceeds to offer Molly a job as a nanny for his 4-year-old, which takes away some of the sting of embarrassment.

Dr. Ben is a widower in desperate need of help in the childcare department. Chloe already loves Miss Molly as a teacher, and what could be a better solution to his need and her unemployment than teaming up to care for his daughter?

This book is a sweet romance, but it's so much more than that. Chloe is adorable and also very much a real child, complete with meltdowns and misadventures. Molly's sewing circle friends are funny and caring. I loved it when Ben would lapse into medical terminology. There are elements of faith, grief, family issues, and racial diversity—all with enough moments of humor to keep me laughing out loud. The serious topics are woven in gently and thoughtfully, and make for a richly layered story.

I listened to this on audiobook and thought the narrator did a great job. I hope I have the chance to catch up with the sewing circle friends when the next Sewing In SoCal book releases in October.

Start With Me

Lacey O'Connor looks like a ladder-climbing book publicist ready to seize a senior management position during her employer's merger, but inside she's the frightened small town Minnesota girl who managed to escape poverty after an abusive upbringing. With the head of her company pulling crazy stunts to find out who is management material, Lacey's survivalist background comes into play more than she would have ever imagined.

Recovering alcoholic and former philanderer, Victor Carlisle hopes to survive the British portion of his company's merger. When he's sent to the States for some shenanigans meant to test the character of various employees, Victor is struck by blonde and brave Lacey. She doesn't let people get away with anything, and she smartly maneuvers herself through the exercises. But there's a vulnerability beneath her veneer, which draws Victor more than her tough as nails business persona.

Lacey recognized Victor instantly. They'd met—and kissed—at a party years earlier, but clearly he doesn't remember her. Nor does he know about their other connection which will bind them together in the future.

Family relationships, mistakes, and character take center stage in this release from Kara Isaac. I had a little trouble getting into this book because the business world is not my realm of expertise, but once we moved into the Minnesota wilds and the English countryside, I was fully on board. There was a lot of deep stuff to unpack, questions to ponder, and a beautiful ray of faith shining through.

Life is messy. And complicated. And we don't know what will be thrown at us next. But relying on God and knowing He is for you will make all the difference in how our stories play out.

 Sweet Melody

Lindsay Carmichael has dreamed of owning a food truck for as long as she can remember. She's managed to open a small bakery and keep her parents' legacy going through her tasty treats, but she dreams of more. The small tourist town of Seabrook, Oregon, only offers good profits for part of the year, and as summer approaches Lindsay hopes she can make enough to keep her doors open year-round.

Heading back to his hometown after several unfruitful years in Nashville trying to write a hit country song, Rhett Foster asks his dad for a job in their family's successful restaurant chain. His father sends him to Seabrook to scout the area for potential expansion, and to help fill his time, Rhett decides to take a barista job at Lindsay's bakery.

More of a natural risk taker, Rhett encourages Lindsay when he hears about her food truck dreams. When one becomes available, albeit with a lot of TLC required before it's serviceable again, his certainty emboldens her to go for it, even though it means financial risk. If they can't make it work this summer, she won't only lose the truck, but her bakery and the connection to her deceased parents.

Rhett is horrified when he learns that his father has changed plans and now wants to bring a food truck to Seabrook. With the reputation of his well-established chain, his dad's truck could easily drive Lindsay out of business. How can be break the news to her? Can he talk his dad out of his plans before everything falls apart?

This is a sweet romance but packs a punch with its themes of family, dreams, regrets, and missed opportunities. Lindsay is relatable as a struggling business owner who misses her family, and Rhett struggles to continue pursuing his own dreams even while urging Lindsay forward in hers. I would recommend this for everyone who enjoys something light and fun but also touches on deeper subjects in a hope-giving way.

Meant For Her

Please be aware that this book covers very sensitive topics, which I will mention in this review.

Candi Reynolds has gone through what no woman should have to face. Kidnapped for weeks, she suffered multiple beatings and rapes, and finally was abandoned to bleed out on a snowy November day. By God's grace, she was found and rescued, and our story begins with her recovery.

Although Candi is still alive, everything about her life has changed. She no longer wants to live by herself, so she moves back in with her brother Cam, who had raised her after their parents' deaths. Her engagement is broken when her fiance cannot deal with her attacks. Weeks later, Candi discovers she is pregnant. How could God have allowed her to go through so much, and now burdened her with this on top of everything?

As Candi wrestles with PTSD and morning sickness, decisions loom ahead. Should she abort the baby? It goes against her brother's faith, but he's not the one having to deal with everything. If she doesn't choose abortion, it seems overwhelming to think of either keeping the child or putting it up for adoption. Perhaps dealing with it sooner rather than later would save her some pain.

All along her journey, God places just the right people in Candi's life. Not only her compassionate brother and his best friend Mack, but the family of her 10-year-old rescuer also play a huge role in helping her through everything.

This is a very gripping read. Although it deals with intense issues, none of them are presented in a graphic way. Candi's assaults are not detailed, even when she suffers flashbacks and nightmares. There are some medical situations discussed very factually, but it is never explicit or edgy. Dealing with such heavy topics, you might think this would be a dark read, but while it is momentous, it is also a page-turner. I actually sped-read through the book the first time I read it, because I had to find out what would happen. Even when I tried to go back and read it slowly the second time, I still had to read the final 150 pages in one sitting. It's that good. That captivating.

This blend of women's fiction and romance is not for everyone, but it could be life-changing in the hands of the right reader. I enjoy deep contemporary stories, and if you do too I would suggest you look into this novel. I can't wait for Joy Avery Melville's next release!

Above the Fold banner

Above the Fold

Elissa Tillman grew up in a newspaper family, and she wants nothing more than to continue the tradition by making a name for herself. But the year is 1922 and women have only just been granted the right to vote, much less gained public approval for women in male-dominated workforces like journalism. Even if one's father is editor-in-chief.

On the day when Elissa believes she has her first big break, the one person she never wanted to see again comes bounding into her life. Cole Parker broke her heart years ago and has established himself quite nicely on the East Coast. Why is he now back in Pittsburgh to steal her moment and infringe on her dreams once more?

Broken after his addictions caught up with him, Cole has returned home praying for a second chance. When his former mentor is murdered and his former girlfriend insists on sticking her nose into very dangerous situations, Cole is on the hunt to find the story—and to keep himself and Elissa alive.

The Roaring Twenties are on full display here in Rachel Scott McDaniel's debut novel. She does a wonderful job setting the scene, with more than a little danger and intrigue during the Prohibition Era. While I enjoyed her writing style and the layered plot, it took me a long time to read this book because I'm not a fan of the frenemies-to-lovers trope. That's purely personal preference, and would actually be a draw to many readers, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. There's much to be charmed by here, and I look forward to seeing more of this author's work in the future.

A Match For Emma

Emma Mitchell has a few passions in life—good food, good friends, and matchmaking. She's had only successes with the couples she's tried to bring together, so why wouldn't she continue?

Returning home to care for an aging parent, Jonathan Noble is forced to face the grief that drove him away from Ransom, Virginia, a few years ago. There are many things he still loves about Ransom, including getting to spend face-to-face time with his best friend Emma.

This modern day Appalachian retelling of Jane Austen's Emma is charming in every way. The tale translates surprisingly well, and it was so fun to spot the familiar characters wearing new names—and sporting new accents! Harriet Smith, Jane Fairfax, Mr. Elton, and others find their way onto the page.

Just when Emma's dreams appear to be coming true, her matchmaking abilities fall apart, her dream of attending culinary classes in Europe becomes jeopardized, and suddenly Jon Noble isn't looking so much like her lifelong best friend as someone infinitely more dear. Is losing their friendship worth the risk of exploring a romance?

The twists and turns of the subplots will keep you guessing about how everything will be resolved. I enjoyed this story a lot and would recommend it for fans of both Austen and contemporary romance.

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Love and Other Mistakes by Jessica Kate, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

Love and Other Mistakes

Natalie Groves has never recovered from the breakup with her fiance when she was 19. It's been seven years, and she has yet to get her life back on track. When Jem returns to town -- a single dad, no less, with infant son in tow -- and asks her to be his nanny, she can't believe his audacity.

Things begin perking up when she has the chance to intern at her dream job. Knowing she needs income and flexible hours if she's going to swing this opportunity, she begrudgingly agrees to nanny Oliver. Anything to find purpose in her life again.

When the story isn't bouncing between Natalie and Jem's point of view, Jem's niece Lili takes center stage. She's sixteen and dealing with the affects of her pastor father's secret affair. Sure she's done something to cause her dad to stop loving their family, Lili grapples with big emotions and sometimes experiments with substances in order to cope with the pressure eating her up inside.

While I thought Jessica Kate's writing style was strong, I feel that this book missed the mark. It's not funny enough to be considered a comedy. Marital unfaithfulness, pregnancy outside of marriage, teenage drinking, childhood diabetes, cancer, the impending death of a parent, and family dysfunction across multiple generations do not a lot of laughs make. There is mention of cursing and one direct curse word hurled from one angry character to another. That's a lot of serious content.

My other objection to the story was that Natalie was completely unbelievable as someone wanting to go into ministry. Though she shows great care to Lili, there was literally nothing else that made me think she would be a good youth worker. Lili has more church involvement mentioned than Natalie does. And while she's supposedly under great financial strain because of helping her parents with their medical bills, she was only working one low-paying job before that company went under, which should have left her plenty of time for volunteering, if youth ministry was indeed her passion. Motives are questionable all the way around. I still don't know why Jem moved back to town. The infidelity was a plot point that the author seemed unsure how to handle directly so it pops up whenever she needed it to move emotions along, and simmers quietly, never fully resolved, otherwise.

I've enjoyed Jessica Kate on her podcasts, and hope her future releases focus on her writing strengths and quirky characters.

I received my copy of the book from
