Esmée Shaw has never forgotten her love, though they quarreled and separated a decade earlier. Now she spends her days as a chocolatier in colonial Virginia, whisking up tasty treats. When she's not baking, she's visiting the local almshouse to meet what needs she can.
When Esmée hears that Captain Henri Lennox has returned to Virginia, she wonders if their paths will cross. His exploits on the sea are numerous and legendary. Has he wed? Does he remember the dreams they once shared, even though they parted on bitter terms?
This novel was sumptuous in so many ways. You will want to have a good supply of chocolate on hand while reading about Esmée's kitchen work. As always, the author delivers with rich historical details and interesting characters.
For me, this book was lacking in overall plot structure and story arc issues. I'm a fan of this author and I enjoyed many aspects of the story, so I'm sad that this was a bit of a miss for me. I'll still be in line for her next release, and I do recommend her novels for fans of immersive historical romance.
I received my copy of the book from the author. All thoughts in this review are my own.
