A Perfect Weakness

John Turner's days as a surgeon in the Civil War have left him haunted and forlorn. Determined to give up medicine, John is uncertain what to do until an unexpected letter arrives naming him the heir of a large British estate. He's thankful for the chance at a fresh start as he leaves America behind.

Though she is only the sister of the estate manager, Penelope Howard has devoted her adult life to caring for the tenants of Ashford Hall and the nearby village. Her visits give her life meaning, something she once thought she'd lost forever. She does not intend to be drawn to the new lord upon his arrival, but there's a certain wounded air about him that calls out to her.

Displeased to learn that it was already common knowledge that Ashford Hall's heir was a medical doctor, John rebuffs all attempts made by others to begin to practice again. After all he's done, he believes he can only cause hurt instead of healing.

I thought this story did a good job of weaving together the lives of two very wounded people in the Victorian Era. There were colorful side characters, and the pacing of plot twists and past information was well done. I would recommend this to fans of historical fiction.

Although I am reviewing this title in conjunction with JustRead Tours, this is a book from my personal collection.

Welcome to the Blog Tour & Giveaway for Cross My Heart by Robin Lee Hatcher, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours

Cross My Heart

Ben Henning was once mired in alcoholism and bad decision making. Through God's grace, the love of his grandparents, and equine therapy, Ben found his way again. Now that his grandfather is passing down the family ranch in Kuna, Idaho, to him, it's Ben's desire to start a therapy barn of his own in order to give back to the community.

Ashley Showalter has loved horses for a long time, and she works with a rescue network to help save animals that have been subjected to cruelty or starvation. When Ben approaches her about the possibility of using rescue horses in his ministry, she's quite intrigued by the idea. They begin an easy friendship through their shared love and appreciation of horses.

Continuing with the story we were first introduced to in Who I Am With You, Andrew Henning — great-great-grandfather of Ben — grapples with life and faith while World War II rages.

This is a gentle story that has some deeper themes woven in. I've never been a big fan of horses, but I imagine those who are would enjoy this story even more than I did. This is a sweet series and I am looking forward to the next release to continue this family saga!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Title: Cross My Heart
Series: Legacy of Faith #2
Author: Robin Lee Hatcher
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Release Date: June 25, 2019
Genre: Contemporary Romance/Split Timeline

Can two broken paths lead toward God’s redemption?

When Ashley Showalter and Ben Henning meet on Ashley’s horse rescue farm, they quickly discover how much they have in common. Both were raised by single moms. Both want to help where they see a need. And both work with horses in the Boise valley. Ben needs Ashley’s help and expertise after starting an equine therapy barn on his great-great-grandfather’s farm—and the more time they spend together, both Ashley and Ben have the feeling that there could be something more between them.

They also carry the burden of past experiences that may drive them apart if the truth is ever revealed. Ben is a recovering alcoholic with five years of sobriety behind him, while Ashley’s brother is an opioid addict residing in court-ordered rehab. Holding fast to the belief that addicts can never be cured, Ashley has promised herself she will never walk knowingly into the chaos created by addiction. Ben knows that with God, all things are possible—but will Ashley find it within herself to give love a chance? Or will her brother’s mistakes and the pain of her past jeopardize her future with Ben?

Cross My Heart threads together a contemporary love story with the heartwarming tale of Ben’s great-great-grandfather, Andrew Henning—reminding us that God’s Word is timeless and that His promises are new every morning.

Live Without You

Six years after her brother was fatally shot, Piper Redding finds herself at the scene of another shooting, and this time she's the one who is injured. Having only recently moved to a small town in Washington, Piper knows no one. Utterly alone, she faces a difficult recovery.

Ezra Bryant ran away from everything after his mother's death, believing it to be his fault. Now a paramedic, he can hardly believe his eyes when he recognizes the shooting victim under his care. His former college roommate's little sister has now grown up — and somehow they both ended up living far away from the Chicago neighborhood where they knew each other before.

Piper is thankful to see a friendly face and eager to know Ezra again, although seeing him brings back painful memories of her brother's death. Coming face to face with her own mortality makes her wonder about her eternal soul. As Ezra has a chance to share his faith, his feelings for her begin to grow as well.

This book has a good depth of tension and emotional conflict. I liked how salvation was portrayed, as Piper was naturally drawn to God's love through not only Ezra but other believers she meets. In the second half of the story I could really hear the author's youth and conservatism in the prose. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but there are buzzwords and a certain tone that all young conservatives tend to have in their writing. Our God is very gracious and I look forward to how He leads Sarah Grace Grzy in the future. She's got a lot of talent if she wishes to continue to learn and grow in the craft of writing!

Welcome to the Blog Tour & Giveaway for The Number of Love by Roseanna M. White with JustRead Publicity Tours! Follow along with the tour for a special inside peek at how The Number of Love is connected to the author's previous book from another series, A Song Unheard. Scroll down for a fun giveaway!

Margot De Wilde has been given an amazing gift with numbers. They're how she thinks, how she prays, how she feels her emotions. With The Great War in full force, Margot's talents are being put to use as a codebreaker in Room 40 - the central hub of British intelligence.

Out in the field, agent Drake Elton is on mission to patrol neutral Spain and keep the Germans from using these peaceful cities and ports for their own gain. He can't get the girl with stunning dark eyes out of his mind, the one he met on his last trip home and who has now befriended his sister.

Through much danger and intrigue, Margot and Drake work with their respective abilities to help in the war effort. A colorful cast of side characters - including some actual historical figures - help this tale sing as it churns from one exciting event to another.

One thing that bothered me was there was a lot of cursing in this book. Nothing spelled out, but "he cursed" or something along the lines of "he used words her mother would never have wanted her to hear." I understand this is a war novel with a high-stakes plot, but it's my personal opinion that including these bits does not add anything to Christian fiction. Other than that, I found this to be an exciting read which easily kept me glued to the pages. The spiritual threads are strong and well-done.

I'd recommend this book for all who enjoy Roseanna M. White's stories or historical suspense in general. Although there are plenty of callbacks to Margot's introduction in A Song Unheard, this book works as a standalone and is the beginning of a separate series. I can't wait for Book 2, On Wings Of Devotion, to arrive early next year!

But when her world is turned upside down by an unexpected loss, for the first time in her life numbers aren’t enough.
