Today we're talking about Bookish Pet Peeves, and I confess I had to think about this one. Due to my schedule, I have be pretty selective about what I read, which consequently cuts down on running into things that annoy me. I did manage to come up with a few.
1. Characters who won't communicate with each other.
Have you ever wanted to yell at your characters to just talk to one another? Ugh, that bothers me so much! Communication is very important to me. I have actually stopped reading authors who relied on a lack of communication to drive the plot.
2. Characters who are overly stubborn.
Okay, I understand that readers like characters with spunk and determination. But there is much value is also realizing that "no" is a good and acceptable answer, and it's much better to think things through than charge ahead blindly.
3. Good stories that are poorly edited.
It drives me crazy when the pages of a good tale are littered with missing or excessive punctuation, incorrect word usage, and issues like the changing of secondary characters' names. I will rate a book poorly for bad editing even if I like the story.
4. When a significant portion of a book is the beginning of the next book in a series.
I know why authors and publishers do this, as they want to hook you in immediately for the next release. But I confess I never read this preview material, so it's just extra space that may mess with my emotional readiness for a book to end.
