Shannon Baker finally has something coming together for her own life. One of her preschool student has been placed into foster care, and she wants to adopt him and give him the home he deserves. She's going through the process of meeting with all the right people while taking over planning for the Baker family reunion. Life has never been busier. And she's never felt more overlooked, especially with her big sister Quinn's return from the Big Apple.
Marshall St. John wants to snag the upcoming promotion at his job, and Quinn Baker promised to put in a good word for him under one condition: that he accompany her to Walker Beach and pose as her boyfriend during their family reunion. It shouldn't be too much of a problem, right? Except on his first day in California, Quinn's sweet and beautiful sister captures his attention. How can no one see what a treasure Shannon Baker is?
Shannon has never been drawn to anyone the way she is to Marshall. But how can that even be possible? He's Quinn's boyfriend. And Quinn always gets exactly what she wants. Shannon is the one who would rather be in the background. And she'd never, ever try to steal Marshall away. But what can she do when he starts paying attention to her? And when he confides his true relationship with Quinn, it still doesn't change anything. If they act on their feelings, everyone will think she's making moves on her sister's boyfriend.
I related to Shannon quite a bit in this story. Like Shannon, I'm a "glue" person who tends to keep things together rather than step into the spotlight, and it's easier for me to help others than pursue my own dreams. I loved the part where Shannon's cousin gives it to her straight:
"...You don't need to be a mom or a girlfriend or anything but who you are to have an amazing impact on this town and all the people who love you... simply because you're you." That's a truth that some of us single girls need to hear regularly!
This book had a lot of complicated emotions and storylines, and it's my favorite of the author's Walker Beach series. If you enjoy sweet, clean romances, make sure to check these out!
Note: This story was written for the general market, and I truly missed the faith aspect. It would have worked so, so beautifully here. Lindsay has written some of my favorite womens fiction over the past few years, including
The Secrets of Paper and Ink and
The Joy of Falling. If you are enjoying the Walker Beach series, please don't miss these!
I received my copy of the book from the author. All thoughts in this review are my own.
