Erin's Non-Bookish Hobbies

Hello, friends! Today's Top Ten Tuesday is a little different. Instead of talking about books, authors, or other bookish things, I'm talking about myself and the things I like to do when I'm not reading or blogging about books. My non-bookish hobbies include...

Writing

Maybe this one isn't so non-bookish, because hopefully it will lead to books with my name on the cover someday. 😀 I've always loved writing, and a couple years ago began to pursue it in a serious way. I have two finished manuscripts and am working on a third. My love of reading has certainly helped me in this pursuit. 🙂 I love attending conferences and webinars, being active in my local chapter of American Christian Fiction Writers, being part of a critique group, plotting my stories, getting to know my characters, and setting their story on the page. I've had good feedback on my work, including being a finalist in the Genesis contest earlier this year. I'm excited for what the future may hold! 

Podcasts

I really enjoy listening to podcasts. I'll choose from a wide variety of topics—history, TV shows, sports, comedy, true crime. Some of my favorites are The History Chicks and Office Ladies. 
 

Cooking and Baking

If food was a Love Language, it would be mine! I love cooking delicious and nutritious meals for family and friends, or baking sweet and beautiful treats for special occasions. I've made the cakes for several of my siblings' weddings, including this one for my sister's last December.

 

 
Figure Skating

I've never actually put on skates and stepped onto the ice myself, but I've been a fan of figure skating since the first time I saw it, which would have been the 1994 Olympics. I'm an avid follower of the sport, and in 2017 I was able to go to the national championships. I'd love to go again sometime! Here's a program from this year's nationals that makes me cry every time I watch it.

Event planning and coordinating

My natural gifts of organization and bringing people together blend perfectly here. I love working on events, whether that be helping with something at church, hosting a party, or coordinating a wedding. I've lost track of the numbers of weddings I've done. I started doing them for friends, but I do advertise online and occasionally strangers hire me to come in and take care of all the details on their big day. 😲 It thrills me to be able to shoulder the stress and let them enjoy their big day. (I know, I'm weird!)

BBC Dramas

I do love seeing Austen, Bronte, Dickens, Gaskell, and other classic authors brought to life on the screen. I don't watch a lot of TV or movies, but I am always up for some kind of classic adaptation. The 2009 version of Jane Austen's Emma is my favorite movie.

I would say those are my main hobbies, but I also enjoy games—card games, board games, word games, and all kinds of trivia. I love learning about different personality types. Long conversations are some of my favorite things. My favorite kinds of music are praise and worship (along the lines of Casting Crowns and Matthew West) and Broadway soundtracks. Exercise is another thing I enjoy, and I work out about 5 times a week. And I like sleeping quite a bit. 😅
