Five Childhood Favorites
Jul. 2nd, 2019 08:24 amFrom the very beginning I loved reading. Even before I learned to do it myself, I loved having my parents or grandmother read to me. Stories have played a big role in my life, and here are some that I read over and over when I was young.
Imagine traveling west to join your parents in your new home — but instead your parents and the entire town has disappeared! Nathan faces all kinds of hardship, makes new friends and loyal allies, and learns to trust the Lord while trying to reunite with his family.
I've talked about these books before, as they combine faith, friendship, basketball, and a lovely western setting — so many of my favorite things! I read a lot of Stephen Bly when I was growing up, and this particular series still ranks among my favorite books ever.
This series was my first introduction to many classic books, like A Little Princess, Black Beauty, Robinson Crusoe, and Little Women. Although as an adult I prefer unabridged in the vast majority of cases, I'm thankful my parents introduced me to these tales before I reached double digits in age.
These books, originally published in the 1970s, follow Ivan and his family as they try to live out their Christian faith in the former Soviet Union. It was a good way to introduce youngsters to the persecution and opposition believers face in different parts of the world.
We had what seemed like a whole shelf of these biographies for young readers! Pictured is the one about Gladys Aylward, which I read many times. I learned about so many heroes of the faith through these stories.
