Professor Horner's Bible-Reading System
Jun. 21st, 2011 04:38 pmI love reading my Bible. At the end of last year some friends were discussing ways to read through the Bible, with the goal of reading it at least once through in 2011. Someone suggested we check out Professor Grant Horner's Bible-Reading System and I was intrigued. I had never heard of anything like it before, and it sounded both challenging and rewarding.
The system works by dividing the 66 books of the Bible into 10 lists. Some books consist of their own list (Psalms, for example), while other lists comprise whole sections of the Bible (such as the Pentatuch or the Prophets). The idea is to read one chapter from each of the lists per day. Yes, you're reading 10 chapters a day and 10 different books of the Bible simultaneously! Once you finish one list you start it all over again, making this a flowing but ever-changing way to look at the Scriptures.
I was hooked after just a few days of giving this a try. It's not as hard as it sounds and it is exciting to dig in and see how many correlations you find between the different books. The Bible comes alive in new ways and things jump out at you that you've never seen before. I loved it!
Professor Horner has given each list a number and recommends you read the ten chapters in one or two sittings every day. The important thing isn't how you read, but that you sit down and put a good portion of the Word of God before your eyes and heart. I personally start each day with a Psalm, Proverb and a chapter from the Gospels, and then read the rest as it makes sense to me. It works best for me to read in three different sessions per day, and it breaks down approximately like this: morning (4 chapters), afternoon (3 chapters) and evenng (3 chapters). I love being so often in my Bible and have seen many benefits over the past 5+ months as I've followed along!
One of the best parts of this system is that if you get behind you don't have to go crazy trying to make it up. Some days I honestly don't get to all 10 chapters. If I only get to 5 then I might just read the other 5 the next day. On the other hand, if I only get to 8 I will probably put in the extra effort to read 12 to get back on track. But there's no pressure and you really can work it around what you need to do on any particular day.
Today is my 150th day of reading the system. That means that (after my 3 chapters tonight) I have read a minimum of 1,500 chapters of the Bible this year! Today is the 172nd day of the year so obviously I've combined/skipped days as I've gone along, but I am thrilled reach this milestone. I've read more for church and class studies, but to be able to actually say I have read 1,500 chapters of the Bible in a certain time frame is amazing.
For information on this life-changing system, check out this link or the Facebook page, or you can ask me about any questions you have. I would love to answer and hope to see you come to greater knowledge of your Bible as well!
